How to Help Your Kid With Math Homework
A practical parent guide, by grade
Before you sit down
- Don't try to teach. Try to ask.
- Skim the assignment first — know what concept it's testing.
- If you're rusty, that's fine. Say 'let's figure this out together' — it models problem-solving better than 'oh easy, just do this.'
- Set a timer. 20 minutes max for elementary, 30 for middle. After that, return diminishes fast.
Kindergarten through 2nd grade
- Common stumble: counting from 1 every time instead of counting on (e.g. 7 + 3 starts at 7, not 1).
- Common stumble: place value confusion (the 4 in 47 is forty, not four).
- What to say: 'Show me with these pennies / blocks / fingers.' Concrete first, abstract second.
- What NOT to say: 'Just memorize it.' Memorization without understanding is fragile.
3rd grade
- Common stumble: multiplication tables they haven't fully memorized — every problem becomes counting.
- Common stumble: fractions look like two separate numbers (1 over 2) rather than one quantity.
- What to say for fractions: 'Imagine a pizza cut into pieces.' Always anchor to a visual.
- What to say for multiplication: 'Let's drill the ones you don't know yet — not the ones you do.' Targeted practice beats general flashcards.
4th grade
- Common stumble: long multiplication and division — kids lose the place-value alignment.
- Common stumble: equivalent fractions (3/4 vs 6/8 — they think those are different).
- What to say: 'Walk me through your steps.' Make them verbalize. Errors usually surface in the explanation.
- What NOT to say: 'You did it wrong.' Try 'I see step 2 looks different from step 3 — can you explain?'
5th grade
- Common stumble: decimal point alignment when adding/subtracting.
- Common stumble: fraction multiplication feels arbitrary (why do you flip and multiply?).
- What to do: don't memorize the rule, build the intuition. 1/2 of 1/2 is 1/4 — show it with paper folding.
6th grade
- Common stumble: ratios and proportions — kids confuse part-to-part vs part-to-whole.
- Common stumble: negative numbers feel made-up.
- What to do: connect to real life. Negative numbers = temperature below zero, money owed. Ratios = recipes scaled up.
When to step back
- If your kid can't get past a problem after 5 minutes of trying, it's not a homework problem — it's a learning gap.
- Note the topic. Practice it separately tomorrow when they're not under deadline.
